Love Stories Now and Then. A History of Les romans d’amour, by Marie-Pier Luneau and Jean-Philippe Warren, has just been published by Baraka Books.

Love Stories Now and Then is the first comprehensive survey of Quebec and French-Canadian romance novels. The authors, specialists of literature and sociology, explore the long-discredited products of popular culture, revealing the impressive adaptability of a rigidly codified genre. Romance novels are approached as archives in which the social and cultural codes of love (taboos, collective fantasies, unspoken norms, flirting rules) are constantly evolving. This book challenges assumptions about the genre and offers a compelling glimpse into a culture, through its more read yet undermined productions.

The book is now available in paperback on the publisher’s website.
